VOLUNTEERS GIVING FROM THE HEART
THROUGH UNIQUE ROOM SERVICE PROGRAM
Fourteen families have adopted rooms through a unique program at the Black Hills Playhouse called Room Service. Last fall, families were encouraged to pick rooms to renovate and have been making plans over the winter months. Right now, through May 18, they are putting those plans in action and it is a beautiful thing to behold.
The idea for Room Service came from two BHP Board Members, Ken Bauman and Luke Cox, after spending a hard weekend cleaning and painting rooms in preparation for the 2011 season. They discussed how nice it would be if there could be a small army of folks willing to help.
BHP Staffers Linda Anderson and Jason Reuter advertised the program, organizing groups of volunteers to pick out rooms and make their plans last fall. Their goal was to get 10 rooms renovated in 2012. The response was amazing with 25 of 50 rooms being renovated this year.
BHP dorms were constructed in the late 70’s by students at Western Dakota Tech and have had very little renovation since that time. Each summer approximately 70 cast and crew members come to live on site, producing theatre in Custer State Park. In recent years, dorm rooms had been in desperate need of repair.
Volunteers came to the rescue and are transforming the living spaces at the Playhouse. One group from Custer has finished their work in which they renovated three rooms and a hallway. They devoted 90 hours and over $2200 to get the work done, which included buying a new refrigerator, microwave for the dorm and new mattresses for all of the rooms. See their work here.
Linda Anderson, Executive Director was on site today reviewing work being done by the volunteers. “You can’t imagine how the spirit of the company will be lifted when they see these amazing improvements. We are grateful beyond belief for the dedication of our Room Service families and their contributions. It is through unique partnerships like this one that we are making progress in preserving this South Dakota cultural treasure.”
