Great Partnerships
South Dakota National Guard Works to Strengthen the Black Hills Playhouse
The South Dakota National Guard arrived at the Black Hills Playhouse on June 10 with orders to rebuild a bridge and walkway on the campus as part of training scheduled during the Golden Coyote exercise in Custer State Park. Guards from around the nation (and visiting Guards from Scotland) arrived at the Playhouse to begin work on the construction project which was finished on Juen 17.
The South Dakota National Guard brings in skilled labor to help with building projects for non-profit and government facilities which gives them a chance to train for future missions. Jason Reuter, Production Manager at the Black Hills Playhouse has been coordinating plans since late fall to receive the company.
The BHP was responsible for raising funds for materials used in the project from generous donors and the South Dakota National Guard is providing the labor. This project is reminiscent of work accomplished on site earlier this spring with the Job Corps where participants received training in painting, roofing and siding. The BHP staff and board are proud of the partnerships being developed to preserve this cultural treasure for future generations.
Linda Anderson, Executive Director of the BHP says, “We hope this will be an enduring relationship—one that has great potential to help keep the Playhouse site safe and well-maintained. We are grateful to Governor Daugaard and staff for support of this mission.” Next spring the SD National Guard will continue work to build a new costume shop on the campus. BHP board and staff are working to raise $85,000 for materials by next spring. For information on donating to the project, contact Anderson at 605.255-4141 or visit donate here online.
